How do I use car batteries to power AC equipment?
I have a large inflatable that I am currently powering with a generator, but I would like to use car batteries as a back-up source. The start-up wattage is 800 and the continuous run wattage is about 500. How many car batteries would I need to power this and how would I set them up?
You would need an inverter of at least 800 W. You can find them at auto supply stores or on line. You might get about one hour of running at 500 w per car battery. Ideally you would use deep cycle batteries that are made to be discharged more or less completely before being recharged. Batteries used in cars are designed for short bursts of high power (for starting) but do not respond well to repeated deep discharges.
