Looking for the best inflatable mattress for camping?
My wife and I usually camp in October / November time frame in the northern coast of California. Most of the air mattress' we have used loose a lot of air through the night. To the point where our backsides are easily on the floor while our heads are 7 inches of of the ground. I know that with the cold weather we are bound to loose air, but i was curious if there are any recommended air mattress' out there designed to stay better insulated or something. We tent camp so it will not be for indoor use. We do not want to get the thermoRest ones from REI because they are at least 100 a piece. Thanks
In all my years I have never had an air mattress that didn't lose air. Also air mattress are not good for winter camping they don't insulate and trap cold air under you. So I can't really say there is a "Best" one out there. Typically I vouch for anything Coleman makes as I have mostly used their products. I gave up using air mattresses when Walmart came out with a 3-4inch thick closed cell foam folding sleeping pad,

I know this is not practical for backpacking but for car camping I have found nothing better other than a chaise lounge pad.

Now the key to staying warm at night is insulation and diet, The key to staying warm in a tent, is to also use one designed for winter camping. Start by setting your tent in a location protected from the wind with as much sun as possible, use a water proof ground barrier under your tent to keep ground moisture from rising through the floor. Next after your tent is up and set correctly with the fly attached use a closed cell foam mat under your bag like the thermarest and there are cheaper copies of them, the thicker the better. If your car camping as suggested already Walmart makes a closed cell foam mat that is 3 inches thick, any way set your bag on that. To increase the insulation value of your bag add a fleece bag liner, and last some folks use a space blanket over that, I don't since it holds in moisture and moisture is a heat killer.
Some folks say sleep in the buff some say sleep in thermal under-ware. In either case both have pluses and minuses. Do not sleep in the clothes you wore during the day as these are damp from sweat.
Before you hit the sack eat a good meal with lots of carbs and drink plenty of fluids. Your body needs these to make energy to stay warm of course drinking lots of fluids will cause a nature call and you should get up and go because it takes energy away from you to heat your bladder and you can't sleep any way so get up and go. Do all these and you should be just fine.
